The Importance Of Communication Skills For Engineers

"Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely

essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge

and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others.

If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it,

then having a message doesn't even matter."

Gilbert Amelio, former President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp

I have to say my partner and I strongly agree on the quote. This quote is trying to say that to be an effective leader is not only about coming up with ideas and learning new things but most important being able to share their visions and expectations with others. When doing so, it should be able to capture the attention of the person or team and encourage them to act on it. To put it more simply, good communication is like a well oil machine. Without it there is no understanding or clear goal and is doom to failure. Therefore we have agreed that what Mr Gilbert Amelio said about good communication is essential for a leader.

  1. I like the analogy about communication being a well-oiled machine, because with refined communication skills, tackling any tasks would be smooth sailing, especially for leaders. Having good communication skills is arguably the most important asset of a leader so as to convey your message effectively to your followers. Without it, not just the machine, but the entire system fails.

  2. Agreed with the interpretation, great analogy. I believe that communication takes 2 hands to clap. The message needs to be conveyed with clarity and purpose. The quote does indeed emphasizes the critical importance of strong communication skills in effective leadership. However, It's not just about conveying information but also about inspiring and motivating others to follow the leader.

  3. I concur with the above interpretation especially through the great use of an analogy. It is of great importance for an effective leader to be able to share and reflect one's thoughts with the rest in order to gather valuable insights.
